Psyllium is a gentle laxative, as is senna. Although studies are inconclusive, St. Johns wort appears to increase seratonin levels in the brain and suppress appetite. If you are looking for a supplement, make sure it contains standardized extracts, which are the purest forms. Sharing Feelings - Information or Attack?

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. “I’m angry with you.” “I’m feeling really hurt by what you said to me.” “I’m so disappointed in you.” “I’m feeling really irritated with you.” How often have you said these things to others? And how do they generally respond? Do they get defensive? Do they get angry? Do they withdraw?Do they lecture or explain things to you, trying to talk you out of your feelings? Do they become people pleasers, trying to fix your feelings? Are they open and curious? Most likely, they will respond with some form of protective, defensive behavior, because they probably feel attacked. Why would they feel attacked by your expression of feelings? When someone has done something that is upsetting to you, the question to ask yourself when you are sharing your feelings with that person is, “What is my intent in sharing my feelings with this person?” There are two possible answers to this question: 1. I am sharing my feelings to give information. 2. I am sharing my feelings to blame the person for causing my feelings. If you were sharing your feelings to give information, you might say, “I’m feeling angry with you, so I’m going out for a walk and try to deal with it.” If you were taking responsibility for your own feelings, you may not say anything about your feelings to the other person. You would go inside and explore what you are telling yourself that is causing you to feel angry, hurt, disappointed, or irritated. You might share information, such as, “I’m feeling stressed, so I’m going to take a bath.” But if you just say, “I’m angry with you,” or “You hurt my feelings,” then you are not taking responsibility for your feelings you are dumping your feelings on the other person, and he or she will feel blamed. “But he did make me angry!” you might be thinking. “She did hurt my feelings.” “He did disappoint me.” Behind these statements lies a major false belief the belief that others cause your feelings. It is not what another person says or does that causes your upsets, but your expectations and what you tell yourself about another’s behavior that causes your painful feelings. If you expected a birthday gift and didn’t get one, you will feel disappointed, but it is your expectation that caused the disappointment. If someone ignores you or rejects you, what do you tell yourself? Do you tell yourself that you are not good enough, not lovable enough? This is what will hurt you or make you feel angry. You will feel hurt and angry when you allow yourself to take others’ behavior personally. If you then blame them for your feelings, you are being a victim rather than taking responsibility for having taken their behavior personally. Others will likely feel manipulated, blamed and controlled when you make a statement such as “I’m angry with you,” or “I’m feeling hurt by what you said.” If the other person says “That’s your problem,” or responds with anger, defensiveness, or withdrawal, and then you respond with “I’m just sharing my feelings,” the interaction can get really convoluted. Next time you share your feelings and the other person gets angry, defensive, or withdrawn, take a moment to investigate your own intention. The chances are you are covertly blaming the other person for your feelings. Once you discover that this is what you are doing, disengage from the interaction and explore how you might be causing your own feelings. What are you telling yourself and how are you treating yourself that is causing your upsetting feelings? You will discover that your interactions with others greatly improve when you stop being a victim by blaming others for your feelings and start to take responsibility for your own feelings. By Geri Stogsdill We go out to eat to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, promotion, etc. Or we entertain around dinner parties and holidays. At church functions, there are socials and potluck meals. You name it and somehow it all revolves around food. Yes it has a role in our lives of comfort and entertainment. Culturally and instinctively we prepare and serve foods to comfort those who have experienced loss, to celebrate joy or to show friendship and love. Food is very important in our lives. Without food we would not be able to perform our daily activities. Our muscles would wither, our nervous system would fail. We all need food. WHAT IS EMOTIONAL EATING? But are you also eating whenever you are lonely or sad? Seeing food as more than just a source of energy and enjoying it simply for the satisfaction it gives is not wrong. In fact science shows that food can promote good feelings by chemical reactions caused in our brains. What IS a problem is when an individual cannot experience pain, anxiety, joy or even boredom without turning to food as means of dealing with those feelings, or they are obsessed with food, weight and dieting. Emotional eaters turn to food as a source of distraction from dealing with feelings. However, eating these foods leads to feelings of guilt which can only be soothed with more eating, restrictive dieting, excessive exercise or purging. Emotional eaters tend to value themselves based on their weight and how closely they’ve stuck to their ‘ideal’ diet. Because of this distorted relationship with food, foods are labeled “GOOD” and “BAD”. Emotional eating can lead to serious eating disorders and depression. HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M AN EMOTIONAL EATER? Do you turn to food for reasons other than hunger? Are you obsessed with thoughts of food - whether you plan to eat it or are concentrating on restricting yourself from eating it? Do you regularly try diets and fail - leading to guilt and further over eating? Do you think about or attempt to purge excess food by throwing up or using laxatives? Do you exercise compulsively when you think you’ve eaten too much? HOW DO I OVERCOME EMOTIONAL EATING? Since emotional eating is caused by looking to food as a coping strategy for emotional distress dieting can actually create more problems. When the emotional eater fails to stick to a diet they suffer feelings of guilt that can only be soothed with more food and in turn, more guilt or punishment. Instead of trying to focus on what they are eating, the emotional eater needs to learn new skills for coping with stressful emotions. Does this mean you should take your first job out of college lightly? By Virginia Bola, PsyD Looking for work is a roller-coaster ride: high with elation when you think you’ve found a great position, low with discouragement when you realize that someone else was offered a job you wanted. Most of the time, you fall somewhere in between, your mood cycling from cautious optimism to keen disappointment. You try to conceal the inner turmoil, turning a brave face to the world, trying to convince everyone that you are “just fine.” For the sake of your health and your sanity, try these approaches: 1. Identify someone who is willing to be a sounding board for you: your significant other, a fellow job seeker, a career counselor, a good friend. Explain that you need someone to help you express the feelings inside and gain a better understanding of what is happening to you emotionally. Then talk to them, for a few minutes. You don’t want to become a burden and your listener is not a paid therapist. Ten minutes of honest revelation and analysis a few times per week can help you avoid ulcers, family fights growing out of your frustration, self-isolation, and will free up the energy it takes to hold everything in. That is energy you need to conserve for job search. 2. Start a journal, if you don’t already have one. Chronicle your activities, how you feel while doing them, and how you feel afterwards. Watch the patterns of your emotions so that you can start to predict when something is going to be stressful and uncomfortable. Schedule a fun activity afterwards to help you regain your balance. If it takes a hundred interviews to secure a job, each “No” you receive brings you one step closer to that final “Yes” you are seeking and therefore every step on the road to unemployment is worthwhile and “rejection” no longer belongs in your vocabulary. Quite simply, field management is not for everyone. However, if one or more of the following conditions exist in your company or department, it may be right for you to hire the services of a data acquisition company or field management company. Your staff is stretched to the limit, your time is better spent dealing with clients than handling the details of fielding custom projects or you demand value for your research dollar. Once you have made the decision to try field management, it is important to select a data acquisition company that best meets the specific needs of your organization. Considering the following factors when selecting a data acquisition company will greatly increase the desired marketing research goals set out by management. Experience in the data acquisition field is of the utmost importance in achieving optimum results. A field management company with an excellent service and track record in the types of projects or with the types of respondents your company is targeting will surely produce effective results. Many data acquisition companies specialize in particular methodologies or study types such as large, difficult, or ongoing projects. Some have international expertise, others don’t. Of course, there is the factor of intangibles - Are you looking for a research partner, an extension of your company or department, or a supplier? How do the companies you interview view client relationships? What is the business philosophy of the companies you talk with? Is that philosophy compatible with your own? What are the operating standards and quality control procedures? How much effort does each company put forth to answer your questions? What is their level of detail orientation? Wooing vs. Courtship

By David Steele As I spread the word about conscious dating and conscious relationships I’m amazed that not everyone agrees with me. I’m learning that for some singles “conscious” is a turnoff. OK, it’s just a word, so if Conscious Dating doesn’t work let’s use another one to get our point across. How about “Courtship?” Now there’s an old-fashioned term few can take issue with! According to the dictionary, Courtship means 1. The act, process, or period of courting. 2. Specialized behavior that leads to or initiates mating. By contrast, Wooing means 1. To seek the affection of with intent to romance. 2a. To seek to achieve; try to gain. b. To tempt or invite. 3. To entreat, solicit, or importune. So here’s my take on the difference- Courtship is a conscious process of selecting and building a relationship with a potential life partner, and wooing is pursuing someone you’re highly attracted to with a specific goal in mind; typically sex or to “get” the man or woman in some way. Wooing seems romantic and desireable to some folks. To me it seems self-centered and impulsive. You are pursuing what YOU want based upon your feelings of attraction and immediate goals for sex, companionship, etc, and you’ve decided that THIS person is your target. People who woo are concerned with what they can do and say to accomplish their immediate goal. Courtship takes the long view, respecting your potential life partner as someone to get to know and determine mutual fit over time. In our culture being patient and delaying gratification is undervalued. Courtship means you’re honest with yourself and the person you’re courting about your intentions, and they are interested in you as well. When you’re authentic there is a risk of rejection, which might be why wooing seems more attractive to some singles. Conscious Dating means to be clear and intentional about dating. If you are simply seeking sex, that’s OK, we call it “Recreational Dating” and recommend being honest about it. In spite of your scarcity fears, you’ll find plenty of takers if you know where to look (such as Craig’s List “Casual Encounters”).
