The holiday season is upon us and although you may be likely to pack on some pounds during this time of bountiful food, with a little planning, that doesn’t have to be the case. Below you’ll find some simple tips from personal trainer and fitness expert Shawn Lebrun that will help you stay thin through the holiday season. 1. Nibble on food throughout the day. If you graze and snack on a little here and there all day, you will not build up that chance to be extremely hungry. Instead of eating one large meal, which ends with an unbuttoning of the pants to let your extended stomach go free, try having 2 or 3 smaller meals throughout the day. Not to mention, eating smaller snacks throughout the day keeps your metabolism burning faster. Two or three hours before the “sit-down dinner, snack on some fruit, some carrot and celery sticks, or any other lower calorie foods. Then, when it’s dinner time, you won’t be as hungry. 2. Skip the gravy, dressings, and high-calorie condiments. If you’re cautious about calories but still want to enjoy the main Thanksgiving feast, skip the gravy and fatty dressings. If the turkey is too dry without some type of sauce, use ketchup or a low-fat gravy. Many times, the dressings and condiments are worse culprits than the foods you put them on. 3. Eat more vegetables with your meal. Instead of loading up the potatoes and stuffing, choose to have more vegetables with your turkey. On a calorie basis, you’re better off eating a larger serving of veggies than you are carbs like potatoes, rice, stuffing, or bread. 4. Drink a lot of water throughout the day. This will help with hunger throughout the day. Water is a great appetite suppressant and if you’re constantly sipping all day, you will not find yourself starving. 5. Go outside and be active Sitting around the house all day watching T.V., smelling the food cooking will keep you salivating and your stomach growling. Take a pre-dinner walk with the family or the dog. Go to the park, watch the kids play ball. If you’re really motivated, go for a jog/run before dinner or later in the evening. Being active will not only help burn off more calories than sitting in front of the tube, it will also keep you from being in “eating mode” from the kitchen aromas. 7. Have a smaller dessert Don’t skip dessert, just moderate it. Have a small sliver of pie with a larger serving of Fat-Free Cool Whip or other non-dairy topping. Again, my feeling is to enjoy yourself and eat a little of anything you want. The holidays are not a time to feel deprived. They are meant to be happy, spending time with friends and family. By Kevin Donlin What if there were a way to *prove* to any sane employer that you alone were the one to hire? Would learning how to do that interest you? I thought so. I call this the “start-working-before-you-get-hired” job-hunting method. You can learn to do it in the next two minutes. And start getting more job leads today. Begin by understanding that getting hired for a job — any job — all boils down to one thing: proof. It’s one thing to claim you’re the one to hire. Anyone can do that. But can you prove it? According to Nick Corcodilos, author of the best-selling “Ask The Headhunter” (www.asktheheadhunter.com), “To get a hiring manager’s attention, you should become an expert in his business, understand the work he needs done, and find out how he would want you to do it. Then walk in and prove to him that you’re going to make his business more successful.” Here are some examples to help you do that … Say you’re looking for a sales job. You can research your target company and create a marketing plan, bring qualified leads to the interview, research the competition to uncover selling opportunities — or all of the above. How about a job as a trainer or teacher? Research and prepare a sample curriculum, then deliver a mini-lesson in the interview. (I know for a fact that this works — I did it back in 1989 and got hired over 200+ other candidates.) Want to be a writer or editor? Bring writing samples to the interview — and write up a special report about your target employer based on what your research tells you. To get hired faster, start working before you get hired. Is this starting to make sense yet? Want a job in IT, or any other field? Research your target company’s products and customers from their Web site, then write a list of possible improvements based on what you find and what you’ve done for other companies (or what you learned in school). Here’s an even better way to research an employer. Network your way into the company and ask employees what they’re biggest frustrations are. You will get an earful of answers. Now, do you think you MIGHT get a hiring manager’s attention if you were to call and say, “I’ve just interviewed 5 people in your IT department and boiled their comments down to three major problems facing your company. I’ve solved each of these problems before. Could I buy you a cup of coffee and show you my findings tomorrow at 3:00?” OK, you say. That’s fine if I have contacts at the company I want to work for. But I don’t know anyone at Company X, so that technique won’t work for me, right? Wrong. Web sites like www.LinkedIn.com let you make contact with people at almost any company, in almost any industry. And LinkedIn.com is free. So you’re out of excuses for lackadaisical networking. With the right mix of research, preparation and gumption, you will literally have no competition for the job you want. Corcodilos sums it up this way: “When you meet an employer, don’t wait for anyone to prod you. Do the job — right there in the interview.” Does this job-search method seem like a lot of work? Well, so is that job you want to get hired for. “Why should convincing a manager to hire you be any less challenging than the job itself? Ready to Lose Weight?

By Carol Solomon Research has shown that change occurs through a process, through a series of stages. There is a certain readiness to the change process. Knowing what stage you are in is helpful to create success with any kind of change. If you attempt to make a change you are not ready for, you are setting yourself up to fail. If you think about the way you have accomplished change in the past, you dont just go out and make it happen. You may not be aware of the process, but it is still there. Here is a brief description of the stages of change (Prochaska, et.al.): 1. Precontemplation You dont see that you have a problem. You are in denial. People in this stage have no intention of changing themselves and usually only seek help with strong pressure from others. They resist change and are often demoralized as well because they view the situation as hopeless. 2. Contemplation You acknowledge that you have a problem and begin to think about solving it, but you feel stuck. People with food and weight issues often hang out in this stage. You know you have a problem. You may even know what you need to do to change it, but you are not ready to commit to action. It is not unusual for people to spend years telling themselves that someday they will lose weight. Fear of failure (or focusing on past failures) can keep you stuck in this stage for a very long time. It can look like searching for the perfect solution and reading lots of diet books, but not actually doing anything about it. 3. Preparation You are planning to take action within the next month. You start focusing more on the solution than on the problem. You also start thinking more about the future than the past. You are committed to action, but havent necessarily resolved all of the mixed feelings you may have. For instance, losing weight requires letting go of some behaviors that may have provided temporary comfort in the past. 4. Action You take visible action steps. You may purchase certain foods you plan to eat or remove foods from your home that you plan to avoid. You take the steps you have been preparing for. However, the change process does not end here. 5. Maintenance You work to maintain the strides you have made in the previous stages. If you dont have a strong commitment to maintenance and a support structure in place, you can relapse back to a previous stage. Its the stage that no one wants to think about for fear of relapsing. If you go on a crash diet, you are ignoring the fact that maintenance is a long, ongoing process. 6. Termination the ultimate goal. Your former problem behavior is no longer an issue and you have complete confidence that you can cope without fear of relapse. Successful people often cycle through these stages several times before they finally exit the cycle. Most people struggle for years to find effective solutions. While it may seem hard to appreciate the process, recycling through the stages gives you opportunities to learn. If you take action and fail, you are much more likely to succeed the next time around than if you take no action at all. So if you feel like you have been here before, you are not alone and you may just be on your way to getting out of the cycle for good! They’re also a fun little extra to tie in the style of the occasion. Today, almost anything goes. And just like the rest of the event, wedding favors should reflect the personality of the bride and groom. Not sure where to begin? Browse this wedding favor guide for everything you’ll need to know in presenting this wonderful little detail with the utmost of style. What to Give - Some of my favorite wedding favor ideas and trends include: Edible Treats Everyone loves something to eat, so delight your guests with something sweet or savory. Chocolates, almonds and candies are always popular. Or give a regional favorite from your wedding location: peanuts in Georgia, Vermont maple syrup, or hot salsa in Texas. Something Homemade Along those lines, test your culinary skills and make a homemade jam or spread for your guests (package them in festive customized jars!). Quench their thirst If your budget allows it, wow your guests with a nice bottle of wine, whether a selection served at the wedding or from a local winery. If you’re really ambitious, consider making your own, and stamp it with a personalized label. Entertain Them Give your guests something that will forever remind them of your wedding day. Nothing brings a person back to a special moment quite like a song. So make a wedding playlist, and feature songs from the ceremony and reception. Getting married in a place known for a great music scene? Feature selections from local artists. Or if the two of you just love music and want to share your tastes with your guests, make a cd of your favorites. Every time they pop it into the player, they’ll think of you and what a great time they had at your celebration. Personalize it These days, almost any item or trinket can be personalized, so think of something creative that goes along with your wedding theme, and stamp it with your initials or wedding date. You name it; someone can customize it - golf balls, koozies, ornaments, seashells, matchbooks, candles or soaps. You’re only limited by your imagination. I’ve even seen fortune cookies filled with personalized fortunes! Give something back Another one of my favorite wedding favor ideas: Some brides are foregoing the traditional favor altogether, instead making a donation to their favorite charity. You can print nice cards that read “in lieu of a favor, a donation has been made to xyz charity.” Just be sure your chosen charity is legitimate, and get a receipt for tax purposes. How and When to Give them - Wedding Favors are all about presentation. A few m & ms can be the epitome of panache when wrapped in a pretty package. Choose packaging that matches or complements your wedding colors and table decor. Matching ribbons and personalized logo stickers or favor labels always add a nice touch. Depending on the favor you choose to give, the choice of packaging may be obvious. If not, consider these fun options: Mini Chinese take-out boxes (or any miniature box decorated to reflect your wedding style) Miniature canvas bags (printed with your monogram or wedding logo!) A Seashell Customized bottles or jars Miniature baskets Small Julep cups Mini Terracotta pots In determining just how and when to present them, you also have some options. Set up a table and display them along with a card that says “Please take one” or “Thank You.” (this makes for a lovely photo opp!). Or make your favors part of your table dcor and place one at each place setting. A waiter or coatroom attendant can also hand them out at a designated time. Some couples even add the extra special personal touch of distributing them personally to their guests as they leave the reception. However, due to timing and logistics, this method is best saved for smaller weddings. What They’ll Cost - Remember, favors are simply a nice gesture to cap off a successfully planned and fully considered event. They need not drain your budget. Expect to spend around $1 per guest on the low end, and just like any other element of a wedding, costs can always creep up to suit your wildest imaginations (hmmm - the diamond encrusted Tiffany picture frames sure sound nice). If budget is a concern, you don’t necessarily need to cross favors off of your expense list. Food and candy items are often inexpensive and always popular. Or round up your family or bridesmaids for a fun night of homemade favor-making. Even if you have your heart set on a high-end item, save by giving one gift per couple, placed between their dinner plates and tagged with the couples’ names (of course, your single friends will each still receive one). Or get two things for the price of one, and ask your florist to create centerpieces that can be split into tiny bouquets for your guests to take home. Japanese Gardens Japanese Gardens and known for their peacefulness and tranquillity. This style of garden uses specific plants as well as rocks and water to create this effect. Often these gardens are small in scale and are incorporated into an overall garden design rather than being the whole garden. Decorative Pots Placing some pebbles around the top of a potted plant can make indoor plants more attractive. Consider what part of the potted plant you want to make the focus. You can use a decorative ceramic pot as well. Decide whether you want matching or contrasting colors in the pot and the pebbles you choose. The pebbles and chosen pot should help focus your eye on the plant you have chosen. Vases Pebbles are also very effective used in the bottom of vases. Glass vases in particular look superb with some colored natural stone in the bottom. The pebble base also helps hold the arranged flowers in place. Decorative vases make great table decorations for dinner parties. Paths and Drives Paths and drives become very low maintenance when covered with a topping of small natural stone pebbles. The pebble size you choose needs to take into account how the path or drive will be used. Heavy car traffic or foot traffic areas need smaller stones as they are more comfortable underfoot and better for cars to drive over. Gravel drives and paths should have retaining edging to hold the stones in place. Drives and paths need to be topped up with extra stone occasionally. Larger stones around the edge of the feature can add character. Pebbles can also be used to cover the base of the water feature and to cover up any cords or pumps that are used to power it. Before choosing your stone remember to wet a sample as this is how it will look in your water feature. Ponds The same rule applies with ponds to wet your sample and check the colour of the stone. Natural stone is normally dusty when collected and when the dust comes off the real color is revealed. Ponds look great with built-up edging. You can use a variety of materials including feature rocks, wood, metal and many others. You can also mix and match various sized stones for a more natural look. Pebbles as Mulch Mulching is something more gardeners are doing in the garden. Basically it involves adding a layer of material over the top of your soil to aid with water retention. This means less watering which saves time and also water supplies. Not everyone has an endless supply of water or the enthusiasm to maintain lawns and pebbles are a great alternative, particularly in naturally dry areas. Weeding in garden beds is greatly reduced. It is quite easy to pull the few weeds that attempt to grow among the pebbles. As the plants mature and fill up the planting spaces there is less room for weeds to find a place to grow. To stop the grass from coming up through the pebble mulch paths we have found that a heavy layer of newspaper and then a layer of plastic or weed mat on top works very well. The newspapers and the plastic help to retain moisture, another important reason for mulching. On top of this plastic the pebbles that were recently in the planting holes are spread in a thick layer. Cardio for Weight Loss- The Wrong Way

By Craig Ballantyne You are doing the wrong cardio workout. The weight loss cardio program you are using is wrong, wrong, wrong! Slow, boring cardio is not best for fat loss. Recent research from Australia has shown that intervals works better than cardio. The female subjects did 3 workouts per week. Group 1 did intervals for 20 minutes. Group 2 did cardio for 40 minutes. The subjects in Group 1 lost more weight! So don’t rely on cardio for weight loss. But a lot of people are doing intervals wrong as well. Here are two ways that people do intervals wrong and that end up reducing the effectiveness of their workouts. 1) Don’t do them at the start of the workout. Unless you want to wipe yourself out and make your strength training less than optimal, don’t start your workouts with the intervals. You’ll get more results by doing your intervals at the end of the workout. 2) Don’t alternate between a strength training exercise and an interval. If you do this, your strength work will suffer. Want to get 20% weaker in your lifts? Then just try to lift something after you have sprinted for 30-60 seconds. I guarantee you’ll be a lot weaker if you do that…but that’s the exact opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve with strength and interval training. We want to be fresh and strong for our strength training exercises, and then finish the workout with energy-depleting, turbulence-promoting interval training. Again, the bottom line: You’ll get more results by doing your intervals at the end of the workout. I strongly believe it is best to separate the two methods…otherwise, the intervals knock the strength out of your “sails” so to speak, so that the results are not optimal. Focus on the quality of training, not just on sweating up a storm.
