College Tip: What Never to Admit, Even If You’re Being Honest

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Crystal Jonas Bevans College tips that no one will tell you, but that are critical to your college success are the essence of my guides for college students, including my book “College Success Your Way” What Your Professors Won’t Tell You and Your Friends Don’t Know.” Some college students haven’t quite thought through some of the things they say on the spur of the moment. Here is one off-handed comment I’ve seen tighten the jaw of many professors. Be socially savvy and spare yourself (and your professor) this much ‘honesty.’ Never, ever admit that you hate the class. I do not care if you consider the admission, as one misinformed student said, “just being honest.” While just being honest is normally a noble trait, there’s no need to have full disclosure about something that might offend the person with the power to flunk you, or to make the semester very unpleasant. Think for a moment about how many brain cells your professor has sacrificed on the academic alter to get her PhD (or Master’s, for that matter) in her chosen field. Quite a bit, thanks for asking. For years, she gave up watching television, spending time with friends, and reading books with no social redeeming value so that she could devote her time to study, write and research, days, months, and years on end to immerse herself in this particular subject. Now, you’re going to moan and groan about how this course has nothing to do with your chosen career field, and you can’t for the life of you understand why anyone in her right mind would make her life’s work in this silly subject for Pete’s sake, and why, oh why, couldn’t you just take only those classes which have real appeal for you? Let me give you some tough love here. A college education purposefully exposes you to a well-rounded education. If you only want to study one topic, see if you can get into a trade school somewhere. A balanced curriculum is one of the great benefits of advanced education. To complain about a class and go on about how you don’t see its value not only insults the person who has made it the nucleus of her work, it also makes it look like you don’t “get” the concept of higher ed. Such is not a great way to impress your teacher. Raise your awareness about how your professor feels about her chosen career field. Too many clueless students have innocently stated that they can’t stand the class they’re in, nor can they fathom why they have to be subjected to the torture of taking the class when they can see no value to it. What in the world would possess them to say such a thing right in front of the teacher? Not only right in front of her, but sometimes, right to her face? Who knows? Just don’t you be one of those clueless college kids who runs like a bulldozer over the teacher by going on about how stupid and useless the class is. It will only reflect poorly on you. Your professor’s impression of you, like it or not, will be consciously or subconsciously in her mind every single time she grades one of your assignments or tests. Give her the opportunity to think the best of you. So, if you don’t like the class, you’re probably not the only one, just keep it to yourself. A Guide to Antiques

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Thomas Morva If you are thinking of investing in antique items, you would be surprised at the things that you first need to know before you go out and buy antique items. This is because, as with any other purchase, there are a number of things that you need to research so that you can avoid making a mistake in your purchases. Nowadays, this has become very true for antiques because of the proliferation of antique reproductions, which can make finding authentic antique items very confusing. One example that you should know with regard to antique items is the language that antique sellers and antique enthusiast use to describe items. This is because knowing the language they speak can greatly help you with your decisions. Antique Lingo First off, you need to know how people determine if an item is an antique or not. Apart from its age, which is usually set at 100 years, an old item is also considered an antique if it has aesthetic and historical value. Now that you know the definition of the word, you can now move on to some of the most commonly used terms in antique lingo. One of these is the term ?original finish,- which means that the protective coating of the item, like the varnish, is the same as it was first made. Usually, items with an original finish are considered very valuable. On the other hand, an antique item in its “original condition” means that the item still has all the original pieces it was made with, which can also add value to the item. Another commonly used term is “patina,” which is the look of an item caused by years of polish, dirt, grease build-up, and wear and tear, which antique dealers consider as the thing that gives character to an antique item. Another commonly used term is “provenance,” which means the documented history of an antique item. One example of this is the value that antique dealers put on items that were used by some of the most notable historical figures, like a table that may have been used by a medieval king to sign a treaty. Investing in antiques involves learning the ropes about purchasing antique items so that you would be able to make the right decisions in buying an antique item. One of the best ways to do so is to learn the language that antique dealers and enthusiasts use. This is because knowing the language can equip you with the right knowledge on what you should look for in antiques and how you can determine their value. Antiques provides detailed information on Antiques, Antique Collectibles, Antique Furniture, Antique Art and more. Antiques is affiliated with Traditional Table Lamps. Telephone - Phone Number Insanity

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell]Michael Russell In this article we’re going to discuss just some of the many problems faced when issuing telephone numbers to the general public. Anyone who said that you can’t ever have too much of a good thing obviously never had to issue telephone numbers to an exploding population. Back in the good old days when the telephone was first invented there weren’t that many people who even had one. For that matter, there weren’t that many people period. Take New York City, which is one of the largest cities in the world today. The whole population of the United States in the 1880 census was a little over 50 million. The population of JUST New York City alone today stands at over 8 million people. And that’s just ONE city. As for the number of people who had phones back then, well it was a very small percentage to say the least. Less than 10% of the people in the United States had phones. Today, almost everybody has a phone unless they live in a cave. The truth is, today you just can’t live without a phone. And for each person who has a phone that’s one more phone number that has to be given out. With the current phone system of 10 numbers, 3 for the area code and 7 for the number itself, that gives us a finite number of phone numbers that can be issued. Granted, mathematically we shouldn’t run out of numbers if you just apply pure mathematics. But then you have to take into account that certain numbers can’t be used. For example, because of information and emergency service numbers in the United States (411 and 911) no area codes can begin with those numbers and no phone exchanges can begin with those numbers. But restricted numbers are not the main problem we are faced with issuing phone numbers to customers. The problems only begin there. Aside from the fact that more people have phones today and there are more people in the world to have phones, people today as a family have more phone numbers. For example, as recently even as the 1970s, a family of 4 had one phone number. Oh they may have had more than one phone in the house, such as one in the bedroom and one in the kitchen, but they both shared the same number. Today, a family of 4 probably has 5 or even 6 different phone numbers in their home. Aside from the main home number, in most families, each member of the family has a cell phone with each one having a different number. Aside from that, since many people do work from their homes today, they also have either a fax number of a separate line installed for an Internet connection. So the number of phones per household has increased by a factor of 5 or 6. As a result issuing numbers has become a nightmare. States are having to break up into more area code segments. For example, in the 1960s, New Jersey had just 2 area codes, 201 and 609. Today we now have 201, 908, 732, 976 and 609. And still, New Jersey is running out of numbers. And this problem is happening all over. And it will only get worse. With the increasing number of ways to use a phone (throw aways) the number of phone numbers that will be needed will only continue to increase. The 13 digit phone number may be closer to reality than you think. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to [http://telephone-guides.com/]Telephones ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Telephone—Phone-Number-Insanity&id=171135 phentermine 37.5 no prescription overnight phentermine online perscriptions cheap phentermine mastercard phentermine to order

Corps Compared to Limited Liability Companies

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Richard Chapo If you start a business, you should strongly consider forming an entity to protect you from liability. Corporations and limited liability companies are two of the more popular choices. The first thing to understand is a corporation is a different business structure than a limited liability company. Many people get them confused. The terms used in relation to a corporation are often also used for limited liability companies, which is incorrect and creates all kind of confusion. Lets take a closer look at both entities. A corporation is just about the oldest business entity we have that is still in use today. The corporation comes to us from English law. It is based on a legal fiction, to wit, the corp is an independent person. As a result, the incorporation of your business is a way to shield yourself from personal liability for any business problems such as lawsuits. The corporate entity, however, does not shield you from criminal liability as the folks at Enron can tell you. A corporation is formed by filing articles of incorporation with the relevant secretary of state. All business entities are controlled by the states. There is no federal system. Regardless, the owners of a corporation are known as shareholders. If you buy shares of Google on the stock market, you are a shareholder and owner although probably of a small percentage. The corporation is controlled overall by a Board of Directors. When they meet, the general direction of the business is discussed and any resulting decisions are recorded in the minutes of the corporation. The day to day running of the corporation is controlled by the officers, of which the CEO is the top dog. The officers report to the Board. From a tax perspective, the corporation can be taxed as a stand alone entity, known as a C-corp, or on a pass through basis, known as an S-corp. A limited liability company is similar to a corporation in that it provides a shield of protection from business problems. The LLC is a relatively new entity. The first law authorizing its use as an entity was put on the books in the late 1970s in Wyoming. In the late 80s, the IRS issued a favorable tax ruling on the LLC and other states rushed to create their own LLC laws. You do not incorporate an LLC. Instead, you organize it by filing Articles of Organization with the Secretary of State. The owners of an LLC are not shareholders, they are members. The real advantage to an LLC is it does not require the formalities of a corporation. It is a technical subject, but just understand that things are much easier to run. Another big advantage of an LLC is you can elect to be taxed as a partnership by the IRS. With such an election, the business losses and debts pass through to your personal returns. It is comparable to an S-corporation, but usually occurs in a more favorable result when it comes time to file your taxes. So, what entity should you choose for your particular business? Well, there is no general correct answer. Instead, one needs to look at the particulars of the business and make a decision. Richard A. Choosing The Best Online Dating Service

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By George Wood There are so many dating services online that sometimes it becomes difficult to decide which one you should make a profile on. All of them have some unique features characteristic of them. You have to prioritize your needs and then decide which one will be the best. This article will help you out in selecting the best dating site for you. The most common and effective way to choose the best dating site is to seek recommendations. Ask your friends and colleagues who have had good experiences on some particular sites. Take some time to visit those sites and see if they catch your eye. You can also start off by searching for good online dating sites and read user reviews and comments about them. If these sites require you to sign up for an account, then make a short profile and take your time browsing through the main features. Most of the sites let you limit your search based on sexual preference, age, country, race, religion etc. If these are your priorities then try to find some sites which offer these discriminations on their search method. Some sites which are extremely popular among people are not for free. If you have planned to spend money on online dating sites then look out for the ones that charge some fee from their members. These sites have great features and applications to offer to their registered members. Dating sites also differ in the way they allow their members to contact with each other. Some allow emails, some allow instant messages and comments and some allow both. Other features may include blogging, interactive albums and video uploading facilities. Try out some sites by simply browsing through profiles as a guest. Sometimes some profiles catch your eye and you want to leave them a message there and then. Make a profile for that matter and see if you get some responses. Some sites have the feature of sending emails to their members informing about potential matches. If you dont have time to browse through all the profiles that meet your search criteria, then simply make a profile and wait for the site administration to contact you. Dont forget that your goal is to make new friends and eventually find dates for future relationships. Make as many profiles as you want just to be satisfied and ensure yourself that you are not missing out on something interesting. Watch out for spammers and fakers and dont give out your personal information on your profile. By prioritizing your needs and looking at your budget, find the best dating site for yourself and enjoy the unlimited benefits associated with it for a long time to come! Free Prepaid Cell Phones

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Damian_Sofsian]Damian Sofsian Maybe you have heard of different freebies on offer when you go in for a cell phone. They range from free games, free software, free ringtones and even a free cell phone handset. Now there are free prepaid cell phones; believe it. The competition is so intense among service providers and handset manufacturers that most of them are offering free prepaid as bait to lure customers. Cell phones are standard accessories for a majority of people nowadays. There are varying categories of users. Some may make extensive numbers of calls, while others may not or may just use them for receiving incoming calls. Such customers can go in for prepaid, as it makes more sense to them. Service providers are targeting light users and teenagers, for they are ideally suited for prepaid wireless service plans. Prepaying up front for cell phone minutes, rather than getting billed every month, is a better option for light users. Prepaid has enabled most people who were hesitating in buying a cell phone. This is bait which most service providers use to lure these customers who are still on the fence. If you can get a free prepaid along with your handset, you can always go in for one. It makes for a good bargain. You might have pay for the handset which comes along with the free prepaid as a package offer. And freebies are free only the first time around; once you have exhausted your talk time, you have to recharge. There is no other option. The entire package of a free prepaid along with a handset is an attractive proposition for most customers though. You can check with leading online merchants; there may be just a free prepaid plan waiting for you. Teens and Bulletin Boards

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Audrey Okaneko Both of my girls have always loved bulletin boards in their rooms. Bulletin boards allow you to change the room without having to repaint and without having to redo the room as your child goes the various phases of teen life. There are so many themes a teenager can use on a bulletin board. Both of my kids collected quotes at one point. With multiple bulletin boards, teens can have a bulletin board with love quotes, a bulletin board with motivational quotes and even a bulletin board of quotes made by famous people. Both of my kids also collected CD covers. How fun to put all of the CD covers on a bulletin board. When friends come over, the friends can see the CD covers and say hey lets listen to this, referring to one of the CD covers. One of my daughters used to go to the movies quite often. She saved all of her ticket stubs. Your teen can arrange movie ticket stubs on a bulletin board. She also had concert ticket stubs mixed in with her movie ticket stubs. Many teens go through a phase of enjoying poetry. Poetry can be copied from a book, or written by your teen, or even written by a friend. Poetry can be on small sheets of paper, note cards, or even full sheets of paper. Photos of teen idols are also very popular. I know there were times both of my kids would cut photos out of magazines of their favorite musicians. Both of my kids also loved to exchange wallet sized photos with their friends. Both of my girls have created bulletin boards with photos of friends. As happens in the life of a teenager, sometimes two teens will have a falling out. Satisfaction could actually be found in removing a photo from the bulletin board. This is an action that hurts no one but allows the teen to express their own anger. Bulletin boards are not just for girls. Many of my friends have teen boys and Ive seen bulletin boards in their rooms also. Boys tend to put magazine photos on bulletins more than any other item. These photos are often of motorcycles, cars or the latest video game information. When my younger daughter went to an out of state summer camp, she prepared a bulletin board here at home and packed it in her suitcase to take with her. When my oldest daughter left for college, she brought lots of items to put on the large bulletin board that was already in place in her new dorm room. Even colleges know that teens love bulletin boards. Next time your teen asks about redoing their room, suggest bulletin boards! Audrey Okaneko has been scrapbooking for several years. What Does Speed, Time and Distance Have to Do with My Car Accident Case?

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Gerry Oginski Everything. In order to evaluate liability, a trial lawyer must be able to figure out your speed, the time it took to arrive at the accident point and the distance you travelled from one point to another. We only need two out of the three elements to figure out the third. For example, if you travelled 100 feet in 10 seconds, we can easily calculate your speed. If you were travelling at 50 miles per hour, and you drove 1/4 mile, we can calculate exactly how long it took for you to travel that distance. Speed, time and distance are crucial in determining liability in your case. What do you think the outcome would be in a case if you didn’t exactly know your speed, and you testified that you were travelling at 10 miles per hour, and it took you 2 minutes to travel 100 feet. Obviously, the numbers you recall or estimate are not accurate because they are totally inconsistent with physics. Keep in mind that it’s not always crucial for you to know exactly all the details involved in your accident. There are usually other witnesses involved who can add to whatever information you have. Anyway, when your credibility is at stake, you must tell the truth, and understand that while driving you are not looking to calculate speed, time and distance in anticipation of a pending accident or lawsuit. The World of Bikini Waxing

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Morgan Hamilton I am one of the persons who will never consider going for bikini waxing. If I was younger and single, then theres a very small chance that I might consider doing it. I am not just comfortable with baring everything I have to a total stranger so I will never go for bikini waxing. In my opinion, it is not something that is worth doing just for cosmetic reasons. Believe me when I say that you are going to experience one of the most humiliating grooming when you go for bikini waxing. This is because you need to get up on all fours and spread your legs as far as you can. This way the technician can get to all the nooks and crannies that you have down in your body. The technician will then proceed by putting hot wax on some of the most sensitive spots that you have. Imagine the pain you will experience when the technician rips all your hair off with a strip of paper. I have seen kits that claim that you can do this kind of grooming at home. However, there is really no way that you can it alone Im not sure that you can do a good job on your own unless your room is full of mirrors and you have six arms. I wont volunteer to help you if cant remove the wax or you have accidentally sat upon something that you are now stuck to because you were foolish enough to try it yourself. The best thing to do in that situation would be to call the wax company. Im sure the operators are quite used to getting phone calls about home bikini waxing that have gone wrong. Its a good bet that this would be the most unpleasant phone call you will ever make. There are other alternatives that you can try if you are really uncomfortable with the hair you have in your bikini area. Laser hair removal can solve your hair concerns if you dont want to go through a bikini waxing every few weeks. Once this procedure is complete, you are usually done for good, even if you will still be exposed to someone else. This modern way of removing hair often takes multiple appointments, and can cost a lot more than a regular bikini waxing. You will have it over and done with and you wont have to worry about it ever again so I guess its worth all the money and hassle. Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning Bikini Waxing. Visit our site for more helpful information about Bikini Waxing and other similar topics. The Costs of Sarbanes Oxley

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Ross Bainbridge Sarbanes Oxley Act, commonly known as SOX or SarbOx, is the single most important piece of legislation approved by the U.S. House of Representatives and the senate in 2002.The law affects corporate boards, financial disclosure and the general practice of public accounting. It sets new accountability standards and criminal penalties for corporate management. The quantity of money a business spends complying with the SOX Act depends on the extent of its current procedures, organization, and technology. Analysts complain that it is difficult to estimate the total cost. The 2004 statistics show that a typical corporation spends $4.6 million in 2004 on Sarbanes Oxley, plus an additional 38 percent for future audits. Sarbanes Oxley law imposes expensive compliance burdens on small and mid-size companies. The act makes audit and accounting practices highly expensive. The requirement of SOX has about double the cost audits, which is generally around 2.5 percent or more of a small firm’s annual revenue. Big companies can afford to such high costs, but they are much harder for a small company to digest. This affects them negatively in developing and flourishing. While SOX has made problem, it has also created opportunities. It is advisable that businesses use compliance projects to streamline their processes with the help of business process reengineering efforts. There are many services which help you evaluate the typical cost of complying with the Sarbanes Oxley Act in the United States. Most of them provide a handy standard computation sheet on their websites, which you can use to work out your own costs of SOX compliance. You can also purchase the spreadsheet at a small charge.
